The woman in the ruffled collar is Laura Bridgman (1829–1889). Left deaf and blind by scarlet fever at age two, she became the first deaf-blind American child to receive a substantial education in English, learning to read and write at the Perkins Institution in Boston some forty-five years before Helen Keller. Charles Dickens met her on his 1842 American tour and devoted pages of his American Notes to her. Later in life she befriended a young Perkins student named Anne Sullivan, who went on to become Helen Keller's teacher. We chose her portrait because she outwitted a great deal more than youth and skill.
